About Me

My name is Henry Sweeting.  I work with adults, from those experiencing anxiety, depression, relationship issues or trauma to those living with other issues including suicidal thoughts and abuse. I have helped vulnerable people at Highgate Counselling Centre and previously at the Maytree Respite Centre in Finsbury Park.
I am an experienced BACP-registered Psychodynamic Counsellor, having trained at Highgate Counselling Centre.  In addition to this, I have an MSc in Psychoanalytic Studies from UCL as well as a BSc (Hons) in Psychology.  I also teach on a counselling skills certificate course.

How I Work

I help people deal with anxiety or depression by looking at how past events and relationships have an effect on the present.
You may be able to point to a specific reason for why you want to start counselling, or you may have a sense that things do not feel right without being able to put your finger on why. This feeling could have developed recently, or may have been with you a long time, it may come and go, or it may feel as if it never ends.
Making the decision to start counselling can elicit feelings from fear to excitement, from anxiety to relief, and may even be all of those things at the same time.
The way I work is to create a confidential, compassionate and non-judgemental environment, in which together we can explore your inner world and think about how your problems might be made sense of and understood. It is not my role to impose my own views on you, or to reduce your experiences to simplified explanations. Rather, it is for us to work together to think about how you understand yourself, your history, relationships and motivations without resorting to technical jargon.
An initial consultation is a chance for us to get to know each other, discuss what you want from the therapy and consider how best to support you with the help you need.
I see clients in person in central London and Highgate, or online via Zoom.

Ongoing Therapy

Open-ended Psychodynamic Counselling

Open-ended Psychodynamic Counselling

With open-ended counselling, you have the chance to explore your issues more deeply and we can understand together how the picture of your life and history fits together.

Time-limited Psychodynamic Counselling

In time-limited counselling, we are able to focus on a particular issue which is currently troubling you.  The sessions will be structured in a way that means this focus will be referred back to throughout the duration of the therapy.

Single Session Therapy

Single Session Therapy

Single Session Therapy is a technique used to tackle a particular, specific problem with the aim being that you can utilise what we have spoken about in a way which can have a consequential impact on your life.

This is for you particularly if you feel ‘stuck’, whether that be in a repeating pattern of behaviour, emotionally, in a dilemma, or in some other way.  We will discuss a focus for the session and I will ensure that we stick to this focus.

Single Session Therapy is not for someone who wants regular, ongoing work on their problems.  If, after the session is complete, you think another single session would be beneficial, or you would prefer ongoing work, then this is something which can be arranged.
